Both counselling and coaching can be helpful for supporting people who are neurodivergent and I’ll be looking at why this is the case and what each can offer in terms of supporting your wellbeing now and in the future.
Counselling tends to work with things that have happened in the past. Why is this important? Well, quite often, our earlier experiences can affect us in the here and now; whether that’s the way that we view ourselves and other people, developing strategies to keep ourselves safe (which can sometimes become a problem in themselves!) or trying to manage feelings which have become overwhelming, like anger, grief or anxiety.
Counselling can also help with trauma and our responses to traumatic experiences. For people who are neurodivergent, it is sadly very common to have felt like an outsider growing up, whether through the education system or in employment, or not feeling understood by and struggling to connect with others by simply being yourself.
Counselling can help you to understand yourself better and support you in making sense of those things that have shaped who you are now.
Coaching, on the other hand, tends to focus on what’s going on for you in the present and support you as you move forward. It can offer practical approaches to managing those areas in your life that create challenge for you. This is where we might look at developing a toolkit of work arounds and reasonable adjustments which support you to live your life in harmony with the way your brain works, rather than feeling like you are constantly battling against it.
By having a greater sense of what you need and ways to access what you need, you can feel a much greater sense of empowerment and ownership of your life, reduce levels of anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Like cogs, counselling and coaching are two separate entities. When used together, they have the potential to offer an effective way to meet your needs by working through your past experiences and supporting you to have ownership of your future.
